摘要

Oceans cover 71% of the Earth's surface and contain 97% of the planet's water. They provide the greenest and least expensive pathways for global commerce, and have structured geopolitical boundaries throughout human history. Yet 95% of these vast frontiers remain unexplored. Better understanding our oceans, their carrying capacity, trajectory and resiliency is the formidable challenge facing oceanographers. The first substantial attempt to deepen our knowledge of the ocean depths was undertaken aboard HMS Challenger, a Royal Navy vessel that, in 1872, was repurposed for scientific exploration. Led by Capt George Nares, this expedition was the first global voyage carried out in the name of science and signalled the dawn of ship-based research in oceanography.
