With no crew to look after and increased cargo space, unmanned vessels promise to save ship owners and operators cash like never before-if you believe advocates of the idea. However, crew do more than just consume food and water, and waste power on creature comforts like air-conditioning. In all the excitement, people seem to have forgotten crew 'add value' to the vessel by carrying out routine maintenance tasks while underway. In the race to reduce expenditure, we have already seen fuel quality drop. This penny-pinching has created new problems with fuel handling plant, from purification and filtration issues to combustion performance. Engines can be monitored remotely but a burnt out injector will not change itself, ditto a burnt out exhaust valve. Even on a large slow-speed engine, these tasks can be carried out at sea.
