Ships are about to get s whole lot more 'intelligent', or at least this is the view of Rolls-Royce's president for marine Mikael Makinen. "Vessels are becoming increasingly complex, meanwhile, the availability of competent crew is declining. If those trends continue, at some point a gap is going to open up. We believe intelligent, better integrated systems have the potential to fill that gap," he said speaking at a recent press briefing. "Today most onboard equipment sub-systems function in isolation. They aren't connected. They don't talk to each other. We want to take the lead in addressing that." Building on Makinen's argument, Oskar Levander, the OEM's VP for innovation, said the industry is at the dawn of a new era: "Ships are already considerably more advanced. There is ECDIS and dynamic positioning. We have health monitoring and decision support systems."
