摘要

Today, in an age of instant communication, it is difficult to imagine life in the early 19th century when sending messages could take days or even weeks. In 1805 when the British won the Battle of Trafalgar, and Nelson was fatally wounded, a fortnight passed before the news reached London via the schooner Pickle. It was not until 1866 that the Great Eastern laid the first successful cable linking Britain and the US. Even then, communication was interminably slow, and extremely expensive. Messages were telegraphed letter by letter, at a rate of one character every two minutes. For this, the sender was charged the handsomefeeof £1 per character. It pales against today's fibre-optic cables, which can carry 10,000 million characters a second at virtually zero cost.
