Seafood is good for you we are told. Indeed, if you have ever read the food supplements of a Sunday paper you will know it is full of nutritional goodness from omega-3 fatty acids to vitamins A and D. However, seafood is not always what it seems. In 2010 up to a quarter of cod and haddock sold in Dublin, Ireland were found to be mislabelled. Meanwhile a survey of seafood sold in retail outlets in Canada found 41% was mislabelled. South of the border, in the USA, Oceana, an oceans advocacy NPO, found that one-third of 1,215 samples collected across 21 states were mislabelled.
