While some people 'fall into' their careers, others have a very clear path. Twenty seven year old Amanda Hastings falls into the latter category, having known that she wanted to be a lawyer from the tender age of eight. "Law is something of a family tradition -my grandfather studied it and was in the navy, so although there was no family pressure, I knew that this was what I wanted to do," she says. Her decision to focus on maritime law was cemented after a stint with a university naval unit, that left her, in her own words, "obsessed with ships". Hastings' single-minded pursuit of her aim saw her graduate with an LLB from the University of Sheffield and an LLM in international trade, transport and maritime law from the London Metropolitan University.
