摘要

The UK has a strong tradition of maritime education, with hundreds ofstudentsgraduating from its shores. Given industry efforts to draw attention to the skills gap and the fact that there is high take up of the UK's Tonnage Tax scheme, it would be natural to assume that young people would have it easy to finding employment. However this does not appear to be the norm, with graduates facing stiff competition for their chosen careers with the merchant navy. Robert Gorry and Tristan Burgess, two young cadets from the tonnage tax schemes told The Marine Professional that they have struggled in the months since completing theirtraining.
