The first of a trio of icebreakers ordered by the Russian Ministry of Transport has been launched at Arctech Helsinki Shipyard, Finland. Ordered as part of Russia's ice fleet renewal programme, the 16 MW Murmansk was a built across two yards: Vyborg in St Petersburg carried out the basic design, purchased major components and provided 40% of the hull blocks; while Arctech was responsible for the construction, outfitting and commissioning of the vessel. When delivered this autumn, it will perform icebreaking and escort duties, as well as towing otherfloating structures in ice and in open water. It will also be on call for firefighting and assisting vessels in distress.
