The IMO has often been described as the UN of the shipping world. However, Scuttlebutt was very amused to hear one prominent shipping personality liken its proceedings to the Eurovision song contest. "Don't assume that the best song or proposal is going to win - everyone votes for their neighbours or political allies even if the proposal isn't very good." We slightly wish that flag states were required to put on outfits and perform their proposals to catchy tunes. It could drive up public interest in shipping - perhaps even to the level where Simon Cowell could stand for election as the new IMO Secretary General? Or are we holding out for will.i.am?
