摘要

Bulk carrier Hanjin Bombayran aground on the evening of 21June 2010 in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty after poor communication between the engineering room and the bridge prompted a confused reaction to an engine cooling fault. When the incident occurred, the ship was in the early stages of its passage from the Port of Tauranga to Kunsan, South Korea. The first point of concern with the engine was recorded at 1937h when the chief engineer noted that the temperature of the main engine jacket-cooling water system had steadily increased from the 60℃ it was being maintained at, to the average operating temperature of 80℃. As the ship proceeded towards the Cutter Channel, escorted by two tugs, the engine cooling water temperature continued to rise. It passed the normal operating reading of 80℃ and edged upwards to 82℃. On seeing this the chief engineer told the first engineer to check the jacket-cooling water pumps and vent any air out of the coolers.
