Masculine Norms and College Men's Rape Myth Acceptance: The Mediating Role of Nurturance

Although previous research has shown a positive association between traditional male gender role endorsement and rape myth acceptance, few studies have examined the factors that underlie the positive association between distinct masculine norms and rape myth acceptance. Given the prominence of sexual assault on college campuses and how rape myth acceptance helps perpetuate sexual assault perpetration. this study sought to further examine what may underlie the association between masculine norm conformity and rape myth acceptance. One gender-relevant factor may be nurturance or the extent to which men endorse qualities such as caring and tenderness. The current study examined (a) the extent to which conformity to distinct masculine norms and nurturance were associated with rape myth acceptance and (b) if nurturance mediated the associations between conformity to masculine norms and rape myth acceptance among 251 college-attending men. Results revealed that conformity to the masculine norms of power over women and disdaining gay men were positively associated with rape myth acceptance. Nurturance partially mediated the associations between the power over women and disdaining gay men norm and rape myth acceptance, such that men higher in those two masculine norms reported lower nurturance, which was associated with greater rape myth acceptance. Our findings emphasize the importance of examining how conformity to distinct masculine norms, especially norms that center on misogyny and devaluing women and femininity. may contribute to increased rape myth acceptance. Our findings also suggest that increasing nurturance may help to prevent men's perpetuation of rape myth acceptance.
