Asthma and pregnancy: What you must do... and not do!: Asthma is the most frequently encountered disease in pregnant women. When uncontrolled, particularly in the event of severe exacerbations, it is associated with an increased risk of complications for the mother, the fetus and the pregnancy itself. The therapeutic objective for asthmatic pregnant women is consequently to achieve perfect control of the disease and to avoid any exacerbation at any stage of the pregnancy. That is why pharmacological treatments, particularly inhaled corticosteroids, need to be carried out, especially insofar as they have already been prescribed over the course of hundreds of thousands of pregnancies that have proceeded without complications. The main obstacle to satisfactory asthma control during pregnancy is patients' and caregivers' fear of the potential teratogenicity of pharmacological asthma treatments. However, numerous data have shown that the majority of treatments for mild to moderate asthma can be used without risk. Asthma management during a pregnancy also involves a number of non-pharmacological measures, including therapeutic education, smoking cessation and optimized indoor air quality. In the rare cases of severe asthma, the continuation or non-continuation of step 5 treatments should be discussed with specialists in severe asthma. Optimized management necessitates monthly monitoring throughout the pregnancy.
