Historic ordering creates ‘banner year' for LNG dual-fuel ships

For more and more ship owners, the journey towards decarbonisation starts with two-stroke, LNG dual-fuel engine technology. That's clear from new ship construction data cited by SEA/LNG, showing 2021 to be a 'banner year' for LNG dual-fuel newbuildings, with orders representing about 30% of the gross tonnage ordered. "The deep-sea shipping industry understands that while LNG may not be the end game, it is the best starting point to get to net zero," says SEA/LNG chairman Peter Keller in a press statement. Using two-stroke, dual-fuel engine technology, ships can burn low-sulphur fuel oil or LNG which can reduce CO_2 emissions by 25%, reduce NOx emissions by 80 to 85%, while virtually eliminating SOx and particulate matter as compared to traditional marine fuels. "It provides a very clear and achievable plan which starts today," says Mr Keller. Globally, there are nearly 600 LNG-fuelled vessels, 221 in operation and another 375 on order, according to DNV. Additionally, a further 142 vessels in operation and another 57 on order carry the notation 'LNG Ready' signifying that they were designed for conversion to LNG.
