The effect of pulp fibre properties on the calendering of mechanical handsheets has been studied. Upon supercaiendering, the surface roughness of sheets made from groundwood seemed to decrease more than for sheets made from thermomechanical pulp (TMP). An explanation of this may be that sheets made from TMP contain more long fibres and also have, a higher proportion of intact fibres than sheets made from pressurized groundwood pulp (PGW). External fibrillation and fibre splitting favoured light scattering. For light scattering, it seems that the optimum fibres are those which partially collapse, thus keeping their lumen as an interface to scatter light. Generally, light scattering decreased upon supercaiendering, with a marked drop at the. highest calendering level. Fibre bendahility gave higher surface smoothness upon calendering, whereas it caused the light scattering lo drop more. Sheets made from TMP had higher gloss than those made from PGW. The porosity decreased upon calendering, and the most for high-free-ness pulps.
