Figure 2 below and Table 3 on the following page illustrate the correlation between base metals acquisitions activity and year-on-year base metals price changes from the average 1998 price. All acquisitions are recorded in the year they were announced. The metals prices shown are the yearly averages of the LME average monthly cash prices. In 2007, the average copper price increased by 6 percent to 3.23 dollars/lb, nickel rose 53 percent to 16.88 dollars/lb, and zinc decreased 1 percent to 1.47 dollars/lb. There were 26 large base metals transactions in 2006 and 42 in 2007-28 copper deals with a total in-situ value of 607 billion dollars, 12 nickel deals with a total in-situ value of 239.3 billion dollars, and two zinc deals with a total in-situ value of 10.7 billion dollars.
