In late October and early November 2006, BHP Billiton settled 2007 benchmark copper contracts with South Korean smelter LS Nikko Copper and Indian smelter Sterlite Industries at 60 dollars/mt smelting and 0.06 dollars/lb refining, with no price participation. This is significantly lower than the 2006 benchmark of 95 dollars/mt for smelting and 0.095 dollars/lb for refining. In February 2007, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold and Ok Tedi Mining settled 2007 TC/RCs with some Japanese copper smelters for about the same terms-60 dollars/mt and 0.06 dollars/lb with no price participation, a later payment period, and a higher gold refining charge.
