NICE says that people at riskof familial hypercholesterolaemia should have a DNA test (Seven Days in Medicine, 11 November). A national drive is important, as this condition is common with preventable but lifethreateningcomplications and is underdiagnosed and undertreated. This is particularly important for children, who should be started on statins by age 10 to prevent development of atheromatous deposits throughout the body and death due to myocardial infarction and stroke.
