Why trainees should grasp research opportunities - Shaan Hyder explains how to gain a rare but worthwhile place on an academic foundation programme
A total of 511 academic posts are offered by the foundation schools across the United Kingdom, meaning that only 5% of medical students can gain a place on the academic foundation programme. However, there is a push towards more doctors doing research. In 2005, the Academic Careers Sub-Committee of Modernising Medical Careers and the UK Clinical Research Collaboration recommended the development of specialist academic training programmes. In 2006, after the NHS came under scrutiny for poor numbers of academic placements, the Department of Health published a report urging that the NHS become a "world class environment for collaborative research in the public interest."
