England's health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has made the issue of seven day working by doctors a key part of his narrative in the government's ongoing dispute with junior doctors and consultants over changes to their contracts. In doing so, he has frustrated many doctors by misrepresenting the findings of an academic article published in The BMJ (doi:10.1136/bmj.h4596) on outcomes among patients admitted to hospitals at weekends. But many doctors, and health service observers, agree that services in some specialties could be improved by rethinking rota design and medical cover at the weekend.
