One junior's honesty led to a complete redesign of induction processes in hospitals across southeast Scotland. In 2011 an inspector from Healthcare Improvement Scotland asked a junior doctor to locate the antibiotic prescribing protocol in his unit. The junior confessed his ignorance of the protocol, and when he was asked why he was not told this at his induction he replied, "What induction?" The junior doctor's honesty led to a radical redesign of medical induction across southeast Scotland. This encounter with inspectors was at a time of increasing concern about induction generally. Results of the General Medical Council's survey on induction were poor, and Health Education England had recommended that all newly qualified doctors complete a period of paid shadowing before they took up their posts.
