Summer 2015 will go down as the 'summer of discontent' in farming terms. While many farmers drove combine harvesters up and down their fields, many more were driven to distraction by consistendy low prices and apparent in-action from politicians bothat home and abroad. By mid-August, it seemed Europe's farmers had had enough and a large-scale demonstration was planned in Brussels.The protest had been organised by European farmers organisation Copa-Cogeca - of which the NFU are longstanding members. It was deliberately timed to coincide with an emergency meeting of the Agriculture Council - a monthly meeting of agriculture ministers from European member states. The meeting was set to be a chance for Commissioner Phil Hogan to brief ministers on steps to address the deepening crisis in the farming sector. UK agriculture ministers would also attend the meeting on behalf of the UK.
