It seems as though the humble bee is hardly out of the headlines. Whether it is neonicotinoid restrictions, dwindling populations or parasitic mites - bees and insect pollinators are hot topics for the farming industry.Although the decline in bumblebee numbers and species can be attributed in part to habitat loss, it is widely accepted that the bee is also under attack from an appropriately named enemy - the parasitic mite Varroa destructor.Alongside a number of viral and fungal diseases, ￡his disease is damaging bee colonies throughout the UK. But farmers can encourage pollinators in a number of ways, according to Sam Durham, project coordinator at the Campaign for the Farmed Environment(CFE).
