摘要

In the United States, more than one-third of adults and 17% of children and adolescents have obesity. The estimated annual medical burden of obesity accounts for nearly 10% of all medical spending in the United States2. Until the epidemic is reversed, obesity will continue to drive rates of chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer3 and their associated medical costs. The Roundtable on Obesity Solutions (the Roundtable) of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine was established in 2014 to engage leadership from multiple sectors that are essential for cohesive and coordinated action to solve the obesity crisis. Members represent local and national associations and non-profits; the business community, private sector, health insurers, and industry; federal and local government; foundations; and academia. The membership comprises representatives from the areas of health care, public health, food, physical activity, education, early care and education, worksites, communities, media, and communications. Through meetings, public workshops, background papers, and innovation collaboratives, the Roundtable convenes thought leaders to enhance and accelerate the discussion, development, and implementation of multi-sector collaborations, and policy, environmental, and behavioral initiatives that will increase physical activity, reduce sedentary behavior, and improve the healthfulness of foods and beverages consumed to reduce the prevalence and adverse consequences of obesity and eliminate obesity-related health disparities. The Roundtable provides a trusted venue for fostering ongoing dialogue on critical and emerging policy and research issues in obesity prevention, treatment, and weight maintenance.
