摘要

Objectives: Grounded in Basic Psychological Needs Theory (BPNT; Ryan and Deci, Self-determination theory: Basic psychological needs in motivation, development and wellness, Guilford Press, 2017), this investigation synthesized and evaluated score reliability estimates produced by the Psychological Need Satisfaction in Exercise (PNSE) Scale and the Basic Psychological Needs in Exercise Scale (BPNES). A reliability generalization (RG) approach was employed to address these questions: (a) What is the typical reliability coefficient for scores generated by using the PNSE or BPNES? and (b) What (if any) factors impact score reliability estimates across studies using the PNSE and BPNES? Research Design: This study used archival data within a nonexperimental research design. Methods: Electronic database and manual searches guided by keywords plus inclusion/exclusion criteria identified 68 published articles using either the PNSE or BPNES that reported estimates of score reliability. Moderator analyses were conducted using instrument and sample characteristics to address factors that could impact score reliability for both instruments. Results: Mean score reliability estimates for the PNSE and BPNES exceeded 0.81 across published studies using either instrument. On average, the lowest score reliability estimates were evident for the BPNES-Autonomy subscale. Moderator analyses revealed instrument-specific effects for select instruments and/or sample characteristics on score reliability estimates. Conclusions: Overall, the limited error of measurement is evident based on average score reliability estimates for the PNSE and BPNES. Interpretation of the moderator analyses reinforces the importance of understanding the role of sampling and instrument modification on score reliability in exercise psychology research using the PNSE and BPNES.
