摘要

To the Editor: To date, approximately 125,000 individuals have received cochlear implants worldwide. Although this is a gratifying number, it is woefully short of the millions who would benefit from one of these devices. The primary reason for this situation is cost. To be sure, these devices are sophisticated and provide good results for many patients. However, they also are expensive retailing in the Dollars 30,000 range. Plus, the cost of hospital admission and the surgical fee must be added to that number. In addition, there can be significant additional cost for postimplant speech training. As a result, these expenses keep cochlear implants out of reach for millions of individuals with profound hearing loss in poor and emerging countries.
