This paper discusses the impact of poly hydroxyl aluminum chloride (PAC) on the first-pass retention of fibre fines and precipitated calcium carbonate filler with the polyethylene oxide (PEO)-phenol formaldehyde resin (PFR) system. PAC was found not to affect the retention compared to the. retention with PEO/PFR alone. The presence of PAC, however, prevented the deterioration of the retention at rotational speeds above. 1000 rpm. The cofactor hydrophobicity was determined but was not found to correlate with retention- Moreover, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy experiments showed the existence of hydrogen bonding interactions between the. PFR and PEO as well as between PFR and the starch-based coagulant. Finally, the importance of unconventional hydrogen bonding is postulated to play a role in cofactor activity.
