摘要

The z-direction compressive characteristics of paper were measured using a micro-indentation technique. The mean compressive tangent modulus was shown to be dependent on the apparent density and relatively independent of the densification method (refining, wet pressing and calendering) or fibre type used (kraft hardwood or softwood). The local grammage, thickness and compressive properties were measured for a set of experimental sheets. The correlation between the local apparent density and local tangent modulus was found to be insignificant. This indicated that the local tangent modulus is dependent on factors other than the apparent density. The local thickness variation was shown to be sensitive to the sheet structure. The correlation between this measurement of the sheet structure and the local tangent modulus was found to be significant, indicating that the thickness variation is more important for determining the local compressive characteristics than is the apparent density.
