Skipsteknisk has huge experience in designing Arctic class shrimp trawlers for Norway, Greenland and Canada and a fair number have, once built, been reviewed over the years by Fishing Boat World. The latest vessel to make it off the drawing board tocatching is 'Arctic Swan', a smart 64m triple-rig machine with a profile and layout not dissimilar to other products of the Skipsteknisk stable, namely long forecastle, short waist aft of amidships and a pronounced after castle/gantry. The net result isthat the shelter/trawl deck is minimally exposed ... only about 25 percent compared with perhaps 75/85 percent for old style stern trawlers. The contract to build 'Arctic Swan' was awarded to Solstrand based on a hull fabricated under sub-contract at the Turkish yard Celik Tekne of Istanbul and then towed to Norway for completion and delivery to local owners trading under the name Arctic Swan KS. Celik Tekne is capable of building ships to about 20,000 tonnes and, because of low labour costs, can substantially undercut North European yards, even the Baltic and Romanian yards to which hulls are frequently contracted from Norway. The vessel measures 64 metres LOA, by 14.6 metres breadth, by 6.1 metres depth to main deck, by 8.9 metres to shelter level.Gross tonnage is 2,580t. Frame spacing of the handsome ice-strengthened steel hull is 600mm. Key capacities are: refrigerated holds - 1000m~3, fuel - 800m~3, fresh water - 47.53m~3.
