Researchers have developed a procedure to measure a fluid's effect on the degree to which mechanical power is efficiently converted to hydraulic power in pumps typical of off-highway applications. Fluid performance has a direct effect on the efficiency of a hydraulic system. A pump instrumented with an appropriately sized inline torque meter allows accurate speed and torque measurement for calculation of mechanical power. A high-accuracy Coriolis mass flow meter and pressure transducers enable the determination of hydraulic power generated by the pump. Comparison of these values represents a measure of pump efficiency. Accurate control of test parameters is critical when measuring efficiency. Pump speed control is accomplished with an electric motor and variable speed drive. Load pressure is controlled via a relief valve at the pump outlet. Fluid temperature can either be controlled using a shell-and-tube heat exchanger, or allowed to find its own level when comparing heat rise across multiple fluids.
