Traditional engine calibration has focused on steady-state engine operation, which accounts for the largest proportion of many emissions cycles. Steady-state emissions measurements may be made with conventional analyzers (with typical response times of 1 s). During engine speed/load transients, cylinder conditions change rapidly, with large differences between each firing cycle. As steady-state calibrations improve, the significance of emissions during transient increases, and reducing these transient emissions can hold the key toward meeting cycle targets. To pinpoint the cylinder conditions that cause these high emissions requires an analyzer with a much faster response time.
