For the past 31 years, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) has had the great privilege of hearing the annual Labat Lecture delivered by a remarkable physician or researcher who has made "outstanding contributions to the development, teaching, and practice of regional anesthesia in the tradition of Dr. Gaston Labat." The Labat Lecture honors Gaston Labat, the French expatriate who became the leading American force in the practice and acceptance of regional anesthesia. Along with the Bonica Award, which honors a similarly qualified individual in pain medicine, the Labat Award is the highest academic honor bestowed by this Society. It is my privilege and honor to introduce the 2008 Labat Lecturer, James C. Eisenach, M.D., my longtime teacher, mentor, and friend.
