Two explorers hiking through the Amazon have used a pair of Thrane & Thrane Explorer 500 BGAN terminals, supplied by Applied Satellite Technology (AST), to conduct live radio interviews and lectures, and upload video content to the web. Ed Stafford, a former British Army captain, and Cho Sanchez, from Peru, delivered a live talk, over Skype, from the middle of the jungle to the Royal Geographical Society and the National Geographic Store in London, UK, as well as fielding an interview with the UK radio station BBC 6 Music. Stafford says he has been sending approximately 15MB of video footage to file-sharing website Vimeo on a weekly basis. "We've been walking for 15 months now, and have had no problems at all," he adds. "BGAN has been used to manage the expedition from locations such as flooded forests."
