摘要

From early times, the humble buoy has been the silent sentinel of the sea, guiding shipping away from submerged threats and shallows. There is evidence they were used as early as the 12th century to help mariners negotiate the Guadalquivir River on their way to the inland port of Seville in Spain. By the 17th century they were used extensively throughout European waters, maintained and controlled by national bodies such as Trinity House, England's general lighthouse authority. However, during the 20th century, after a millennium of mute service, the buoy suddenly acquired a voice.
