摘要

The frozen expanse of Siberia is no place for the fainthearted. Summer lasts about six weeks, winter temperatures average - 15C and the population density is just three people to every square kilometre. Job opportunities are severely limited. But Siberia's harsh environment is a fairly typical workplace for employees in one of the world's biggest industries: oil and gas. In fact, it is almost exclusively the inaccessible and hostile regions of the world that harbour our important reserves of fossil fuels. From the Asian steppe to the Amazonian forests of Ecuador, some of the most remote parts of the globe, oil and gas companies are involved in a daily search for new reservoirs of mineral product.
