The cable ship Chamarel has upgraded its Inmarsat A to the greater efficiency and capability of Fleet F55 as part of its critical role maintaining subsea cables between Africa, Europe and Asia. Submarine fibre optic cables are a key component of fixed communications infrastructure. One of the more ambitious projects has been the laying of the SAT3-WASC-SAFE cable system, a US$600 million scheme linking Africa with Europe and Asia. This mammoth cable begins in Portugal and runs 14,350km (8,917 miles) along the entire West Coast of Africa, rounding the Cape of Good Hope and traveling a further 13,500km (8,389 miles) on to India and Malaysia.
