The Netherlands is keen to retain its position as an international gateway to the EU. The country's political, social and economic stability, highly qualified and multilingual workforce, pro-business policies and privileged geographical location should ensure that it continues to receive a large share of foreign investment from within and outside the EU. The strong international orientation of the local economy presents some risks amid an uncertain outlook for global growth and trade. The economy remains highly exposed to global trade flows, which have been substantially disrupted by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Investors may also proceed with caution as they await further clarity on the future of EU-UK trade relations, even following the new Trade and Co-operation Agreement that took effect in January 2021. The strong impact of the 2008-09 financial crisis on the Netherlands also remains a not-so-distant memory, but the export-led economy has recovered strongly, and unemployment has fallen quickly. A relatively low corporate tax burden will continue to attract foreign firms, though this may come under pressure amid international efforts to combat tax avoidance. Intensified efforts to combat climate change are also expected to lead to new environmental regulations and taxes in the coming years.
