Depression is a major health burden worldwide, yet is often given low priority in regions where basic health needs are unmet. This study compared the pre- and postintervention scores on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) following treatment with eidetic therapy (ET) in an emerging country population. Several covariates predictive of improvement were also assessed. Ten men and women having high BDI scores were selected via referral through local hospitals in Islamabad, Pakistan. The study was conducted in three phases: preintervention involving assessment, intervention involving application of principles of ET over a 5-7 week period, and postintervention for monitoring and reassessment. Depressive symptom scores were significantly lower following ET. Age, marital status, income, and preintervention BDI scores were associated with greater improvement in depressive symptoms. Qualitative analysis identified several common themes related to improvement. ET may present a more culturally friendly brief therapy option for individuals with significant depressive symptoms from emerging countries, involving fewer resources yet still effective in helping to restore clients' psychological health.
