Revenue Cycle Management in an Evolving Healthcare Landscape

How is the field of revenue cycle management (RCM) changing in the evolving operating environment for hospitals, medical groups, and health systems? Technology utilization, payer reform, consumer focus, and advances in medicine are all driving extraordinary demand for healthcare operational transformation. As this landscape evolves, the strategy and fundamental work to support this evolution must also change. For example, procedures that previously were delivered only in an acute-care setting are now provided in ambulatory, virtual, and home settings. Although this is largely driven by value-based reimbursement methodologies, it has been recently accelerated with the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, healthcare organizations are required to invest in tools that improve consumers' overall experience by allowing them to schedule appointments, verify eligibility and benefits, understand financial responsibility, and make online payments, from anywhere at any time. This is in stark contrast to the traditional revenue cycle management model where the patient would call to schedule an appointment.
