Making data available is essential for validating and furthering scientific discoveries. Helping authors navigate whether, how and in what form to share the data is also essential. If we have learned something during the last year, it is that sharing data and scientific results is essential for addressing a public health emergency. The World Health Organization noted this early in the COVID-19 pandemic, but had already emphasized this need during the outbreak of Ebola virus disease in 2015 in a statement issued after the convening of stakeholders from academia, the industry, governments and publishers.
