摘要

Few flowers can boast as swift a success story as the Asiatic lily. As recently as the 1930s, lilies in general were still considered delicate and temperamental—hard to grow, and unreliable as cut flowers. Their reputation changed with the introduction, in 1941, of the "Enchantment7 lily, by Dutch-American hybridizer Jan de Graaff. A brilliant orange with a speckled throat and blooms that sat erect on their stems, "Enchantment7 proved enormously popular. Although it was followed by other successfulhybrids, notably the yellow "Connecticut King', for years many people referred to all Asiatic lilies as Enchantment lilies. The term ""mid-century hybrids" was also used.
