Some Chinese aluminum smelters were considering cutting production and some had shut down those cells that needs to be checked or repaired in the short term, industrial insiders said. Under the current market situation, over 80 percent of aluminum smelters have recorded loss this year with production cost of the most of them reaching 20,000yuan/tonne while some at 16,000yuan/tonne, against the selling price of around 16,500yuan/tonne on domestic market in recent months. But almost all smelters still strive to maintain normal production because there had been a forecast that alumina price may begin to drop from second half this year and fall largely in the late of this year.
