Fueled by the high alumina price, a number of alumina projects are now in construction or in plan in China but the country lacks in bauxite resources and thus over-expansion, in alumina project should be curbed, industrial insiders said. According to the industrial survey, there were 26 alumina projects that been announced with a combined capacity 28.141 million tpy by the end of 2004. Except those projects that will be constructed in the country but use overseas bauxite resources or will be constructed abroad, the projects that will use domestic bauxite resources have a combined capacity 16.041 million tpy.
