How a small, growing shop turned disaster into opportunity. When a major tornado swept through the small town of La Plata, Maryland, in April 2002, it demolished the entire downtown area. Burch's Florist, which was located about a quarter of a mile from the main destruction, had been open only about five years and was still a fledgling business at the time. Yet, instead of landing a devastating blow to the small floral shop wedged between a hair salon and a thrift shop, the tornado proved to be a vehicle for positive change, providing the impetus for an already anticipated move.
