It's relatively easy to "know your customer" when the surrounding community is stable and homogeneous, providing a relatively uniform buyer profile. But client commonality implodes in places like Houston-adjacent Pasadena, Texas, home of Burleson Florist. Two major factors make Burleson's business uniquely challenging. One is the melting pot of tastes, traditions, and business opportunities created by the intersection of old oil money, a substantial middle class (enough families to populate two nearby high schools), a rapidly growing artisan community, NASA commuters, and an endless parade of browsers from nearby boom-or-bust Houston. Add in some big corporate accounts, which account for about half of Burleson's local orders.
