Spain has well-established political and financial mechanisms in place for foreign investors, as well as a workforce accustomed to multinational practices and younger managers who have adopted a more flexible business culture. Other advantages include ease of access to the EU market, a favourable quality of life, relatively transparent business practices and a functional legal system. With a policy focus on developing an environment for high-tech companies, financial services and innovation as well as a workforce with technical skills, the country has become an attractive location for foreign direct investment within Europe. Unit labour costs have fallen, and a young and increasingly skilled labour force underpins policies for digitalisation and green growth. The finalisation of a trade and investment agreement between the EU and the UK has restored stability to Spain's position as an important trade and investment partner for the UK. Buoyed by export income, tourism and its high-tech companies, Spain has enjoyed steady macroeconomic growth in recent years. However, restrictions imposed globally on international and domestic travel and hospitality services in response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic have severely hit the services sector, which is a key driver of economic growth and employment.
