At least 40 % of the desmid taxa encountered during a short stay in Madagascar appeared to be characterized by a non-cosmopolitan distribution. The majority of those taxa have only been reported from Africa or from both Africa and tropical Asia, suggesting dispersal biogeography as underlying model of present day composition of the Malagassy desmid flora. A number of species are taxonomically and biogeographically discussed. Two species are described as new to science: Cosmarium madagascariense sp. nov., and Micrasterias madagascariensis sp. nov.
