摘要

In a recent paper, Akasofu [2013] questioned whether or not the energy accumulated in the magnetotail is sufficient for substorm energy. For this purpose, he estimated that the total magnetic energy of the magnetotail at distances between 10 and 20 R_E (6.5 × 10~(14) J or 6.5 × 10~(21) ergs) cannot supply enough energy to be dissipated in the polar ionosphere (1.2 × 10~(15) J or 1.2 × 10~(22) ergs). He then concluded that energy for the expansion phase must result from some process other than near-Earth magnetic reconnection. The purpose of the present commentary is to point out that his discussion is based on an improper set of values and his logic is flawed.
