Brazil has emerged as an important player in the global merchandise-trade market, though exports account for less than 15% of GDP. The liberalisation of the country's foreign-trade regime, which began in the 1990s, combined with a more active policy of export promotion in recent years, abundant natural resources and strong industrial capacity have stimulated growth in Brazil's trade activity. Merchandise exports (free on board-fob) from Brazil stood at US$210.7bn in 2020, down from US$225.8bn in 2019. Merchandise imports (fob) fell to US$178.3bn in 2020 to yield a US$32.4bn surplus, compared with imports of US$199.3bn in 2019 and a US$26.5bn surplus. The services balance remained in deficit at US$20.9bn in 2020, down from US$35.5bn in 2019.
