摘要

Encryption is the process of converting plaintext into ciphertext using a key. The ciphertext is only readable to key holders who can decrypt the data. Decryption translates ciphertext back to plaintext. Cryptography has become deeply interwoven in numerous facets of modern computer operations. It is "used to perform or support several basic security services: confidentiality, integrity authentication, source authentication, authorization and non-repudiation." Ancient Roman ciphers were simple and limited to written alpha-numeric characters, but modern cryptographic functions performed by computers can translate any data that can be expressed in computer code, i.e., binary (l's and 0's), into unreadable ciphertext. In simple terms, encryption and decryption is the process of a computer conducting a highly complex math problem — a problem so complex that it could not be done even using computer speed, processing, and memory capacity without the key.
