The paper by Akasofu et al. [2010, hereinafter Paper 1] gives an ambiguous interpretation of the auroral substorm observations. The authors consider their conclusion as a new result but it does not follow from the observations described in the paper. On the other hand, the phenomenon discussed was investigated earlier in papers not cited in Paper 1.
